Mastrojanni has created my all-time favorite Brunello packaging. A simple white label is embellished with an individually applied red wax seal. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is just as beautiful on the inside. This ample 65,000-bottle release absolutely defies the vintage expectations. There's so much vibrant fruit here and freshness. The wine is textured and firm with plenty of creamy weight to soften it out. This is a phenomenal interpretation of the 2017 growing season.

Developed-looking ruby. Balsamic cherry fruit on the nose and juicy cherry fruit on the palate. It doesn't make big waves complexity-wise, but it is long and with a surprising amount of acidity on the finish. (WS)

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is wild, dark and earthy in nature, dusty rose and sour cherry scents giving way to balsam herbs and hints of animal musk. The textures are silky-smooth and elegant, cooling the palate with minty herbs, while tart berries, black currants and saline-minerals slowly saturate. Fine tannins reveal themselves only through the finale, tapering off salty and fresh, yet leaving a dry impression. Production of the Mastrojanni Brunello was down 20% in 2017.

Mid ruby. Pretty intense, unmistakably Montalcino nose. Ripe fruit, even a little sweet on palate entry (unusual for 2017). This wine with its fairly prominent tannins should be judged a success. Dry finish. Just a little more flamboyant than some of the more purist examples, such as the Canalicchio di Sopra 2017 regular bottling. (JR)
