Tasting notes
The 2017 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru, from the _ domaine ’s 420 square meters of vineyard, is probably not LVMH's favorite wine, since it denies them _monopole status. Surprisingly, Romain Taupenot told me that it is de-stemmed despite constituting less than a barrel each year. The generous, well-defined bouquet features wild strawberry, cranberry, incense and hints of vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and good grip, quite saline in the mouth and fanning out toward the finish. This is one of the most elegant Clos des Lambrays I have encountered over the years.

In tank and will be bottled in February. The barrel is extra-small to hold the fruit of just 4.3 ares (0.1 acres). Light to mid cherry red. Sweet but dark and spicy. This has a powerful beauty and a subtlety that is deceptive. There's a lightness of touch and a delicate spice that is so light on its feet. Complex aroma of spice and fruit and something savoury but juicy at the same time. Really difficult to describe because it has a delicate intensity and amazing length. Cool, long and sophisticated. Seems so light. (JH)
