Tasting Notes
This site is one of the region’s oldest – planted in the seventh century by the Benedictine monks. The site was once a quarry, the craggy cliffs forming an amphitheatre, shielded from the wind and basking in the sun. The resulting wine is unsurprisingly richly fruited – with ripe dark bramble and currants providing a sweet, concentrated core. There’s a saline freshness off-setting the fruit, though, and a savoury twist to the finish. Lovely density and amazing length. From 0.87 hectares.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe Aux Moines 1er Cru showed a very small reduction on the nose. Slightly tertiary in style, black plum intermingling with boysenberry fruit, touches of graphite coming through with time. The palate is very concentrated on the entry: a fine bead of acidity, beautifully structured with a fresh, vibrant finish and a minerally aftertaste. The component parts have to meld together here, so afford this 5-6 years in bottle.
A rich even purple colour. The bouquet is very classy, in a restrained but refined manner suggesting more opulence to come. Just a touch of pepper. Dark raspberry, complex, juicy, structured, it is all there with a persistence that outstrips the other Gevrey 1ers crus tasted to date.
A warm amphitheatre of a vineyard, hewn from an ancient quarry. Tank sample Mid-deep ruby. Ripe black-raspberry fruit. Calm and elegant, with a suave restraint. Balanced and poised but quite marked structure.
