Fourrier’s plot is less than a hectare (0.89), but sits right next door to Rousseau’s. The vines are over 100 years old and run the full length of the vineyard, from the top’s white marl to the bottom’s heavier clay. There’s no doubt tasting the wine that it is a superior Premier Cru site – its power and weight earning true respect. It’s full of fresh yet ripe dark bramble fruit. Swarthy and rich, there’s an intense structure that tells of the underlying potential, cloaked in supple fruit. Moreish acidity drives a long finish.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, which is the regular cuvée, is more backward on the nose: dark berry fruit, touches of cola, crushed stone and marmalade. It becomes a little more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. This is one of the fleshier Clos Saint-Jacques. It becomes a little more candied with orange zest, allspice and a touch of cinnamon towards the finish. The 2020 lingers nicely in the mouth. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques wafts from the glass with aromas of cherries, sweet red berries, rose petals, orange rind, peonies and spices. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, it's velvety and perfumed, with lively acids, beautifully refined tannins and a long, expansive finish.
