Score 91-93/100 · Drink 2025-2045, Neal Martin, Vinous, Dec 2021

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru contains 50% whole bunch. It has a rather broody bouquet, a little introverted at the moment, with dark berry fruit, forest floor and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied, the whole bunch defining the entry, a little stemmy but with decent depth and plenty of freshness on the spicy finish. One of the best Gevrey’s from the Domaine this year.

50% whole bunch from the old vines. Fine mid purple. There is a certain tension here, some cherry kernel notes, significant intensity with good acidity. The stems give a little lifted tingle at the back. Not massive but fine and with length.

(from a huge holding of 3.15 ha of vines on the Brochon side; 50% whole clusters). Reduction masks everything but subtle floral nuances. More interesting are the notably finer and more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess both a lovely texture and underlying tension while delivering fine length on the youthfully austere finale. This too is an excellent Gevrey villages that is firm enough to reward a decade of keeping. (90-92)/2030+
