FINE+RARE, Oct 2021

Grands Echézeaux has more clay than its neighbour, producing a more fulsome style. Nicolas Potel’s bottling hails from a tiny 0.032-hectare plot – and it is a beautiful contrast to the Echézeaux. This is spicier, with cinnamon and anise, supporting waves of plush, dark fruit. It’s generous and round with bramble fruit and plump black cherry, supported by a firm tannic structure. Concentrated, rich and long. Serious stuff.

Cask sample. Dark crimson. Reticent on the nose and a tiny bit austere on the palate – freshness taken to an extreme? Pretty dry and drying on the end. It may well overtake the Échezeaux in the end but for the moment it’s a tad short of fruit. Though it’s certainly concentrated. (JR)
