From one of the greatest vineyards in the Côte d’Or, Tortochot’s Lavaux-Saint-Jacques is always impressive. The vines’ proximity to the neighbouring Clos Saint-Jacques no doubt helps in this respect. There is a lovely restraint to the nose, a seriousness too, with earthy, blackberry aromas interspersed with lighter, floral perfume, light pepper and white truffle notes. There is great fleshiness to the tannins, which are rounded and elegant in the mouth. This wine has tremendous depth and fantastic fruit concentration on the long finish.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru shows better than the sample tasted in London, hence my higher score. It has an attractive, though not compelling bouquet with rose petal and incense-tinged red fruit, predominantly raspberry and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with some chewiness on the entry, plenty of extract here, a little powdery in texture with what you might describe as a "gutsy" finish. It just needs a little more flair.

Cask sample. Elegant, classy wine with fine structure, good acid and tannin framework. Not over-sweet but all the better for that. Will age very nicely. (AWH)
