Cyril Audoin and his father constantly debate which of Champs Salomon and Favières is the better plot in Marsannay, with Champs Salomon edging it for him in 2020. For us, however, it was Favières – an incredibly poor site with just 30cm topsoil, where Audoin owns just over a hectare. The resulting wine is pretty and detailed. The nose is floral and lifted with crushed chalk and raspberries beneath the delicate perfume. The acidity is almost zesty, giving the wine great energy to match the lacy layers of red and dark berry fruit. There’s a dark, savoury twist to the crunchy finish with fine tannins – and much more to come from this wine.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackberries, raspberries, sweet spices and peonies, Audoin's 2020 Marsannay Les Favières is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, its powdery tannins largely concealed in a layered core of vibrant, fragrant fruit. While it's especially suave out of the gates, this is always the domaine's long-distance runner, so patience will be rewarded.
