Tasting Notes

Tasting notes
FINE+RARE, Oct 2021

Albert Bichot is the largest owner of Malconsorts, with 1.76 of the 2.5-hectare Premier Cru neighbouring La Tâche. In 2020, it is exceptional. The nose opens with rich, concentrated plum and cherry fruit, with floral and spice notes. The powerful tannins are well balanced, the wood bringing enough to balance the wine’s incredible fruit profile. There is a great density and tension on the mid-palate, with more spice and cedar notes, the clean acidity driving a fresh, long, crunchy finish revealing more plum. This is worth all the effort, an absolutely brilliant wine. Drink 2029-2045.

The 2020 Vosne-Romane Les Malconsorts 1er Cru (Bichot are the largest owners in this Premier Cru) is another cuve that I feel was picked a little too late (31 August). There are slight prune-like notes on the nose that just detract from the delineation and give it a Grenache-like personality. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, quite plush and decadent but it is missing amplitude and terroir-expression towards the finish.

TA (sulphuric) 4.25 g/l, TA (tartaric) 6.51 g/l, pH 3.3. 40% whole bunch. 17 months’ oak ageing, 40% new. Cask sample. Closed, intense but still complex. Deep hue, violet and rose-petal nose, plenty of substance. Pure, black fruit, oak evident. An electric, energetic Vosne which has a wonderful balance of precision, acidity and density. Will age several decades. (AWH) 13.9% (17.5++)

Ultra-concentrated purple, with very powerful plump and plummy fruit, followed by very firm tannins behind. One of the more powerful in alcohol too. For the moment not really in balance though the fruit has not lost all its freshness.
