A subtle but perceptible touch of wood sets off the equally ripe aromas of cassis, violet and Asian-style tea. The rich, concentrated and unusually powerful flavors, at least in the context of what is typical for Amoureuses, exhibit good length though the prominent and very firm supporting tannins are borderline rustic. This slightly edgy effort is not especially harmonious at present and it's an open question whether it will become better-balanced with age.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a glorious bouquet, very pure with plenty of black cherries, blueberry, violet and mineral scents. This is beautifully-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity, quite caressing in terms of its silky texture but with real backbone behind it. This is one of the standouts from Albert Bichot this vintage.

TA (sulphuric) 3.8 g/l, TA (tartaric) 5.8 g/l, pH 3.4. 16 months’ oak ageing, 35% new. Cask sample. A massive step up from the Chabiots. Intense, inky colour. Brooding dark blackberry fruit with a lovely leafy lift on the nose. Plush and luscious in texture, great smoothness of tannin with crisp acidity all in great balance. More than delivers what is expected for a premier cru. (AWH) 13.4% (18++)

Although the Bichot family settled in the region in 1350, Albert Bichot was founded in 1831 by Bernard Bichot. Today the producer is one of Burgundy’s most respected, making wines from both its own vineyards and with purchased fruit.
