Mid crimson. Intense and ripe cherry fruit but just on the right side of ripeness. Open and inviting. Juicy, full-fruited, firm and fresh. A complete whole at a decent price. (JH)

The 2018 Chorey-lès-Beaune Pièce du Chapitre is a two-hectare monopole of 60-year-old vines that the domaine inherited in 2001. This cuvée is only sold in Europe. It offers blackberry and briar on the elegant and quite understated nose. The palate is nicely structured with pretty blue fruit toward the finish. Approachable and quite delicious.

Cask sample. Monopole. Earthy nose. Then sweet, charming fruit. Really, what’s not to like if you’re prepared to buy an unfashionable appellation? VGV (JR)
