Tasting notes
Saturated magenta. Powerful, mineral-driven red and blue fruit, candied violet, olive and exotic spice scents show fine definition and lift. Densely packed and energetic on the palate, offering intense, spice-accented bitter cherry, Chambord and blueberry flavors that open up with air. The blue fruit and floral notes drive an impressively long, finely detailed finish that's given grip by polished, steadily building tannins. 20% new oak.

Burgaud's dark, brooding 2019 Cote Rotie stubbornly offers up hints of leather, spice and espresso. It's medium to full-bodied, smooth and inexpressive on the palate but finishes well, with hints of blackberries and ample length, so perhaps I've underrated it. As usual, it's a blend of several top parcels, aged in 20% new oak.
Closer in style to the 2018 than the 2017, the 2019 Cote Rotie is a big, rich, powerful Côte Rôtie that has loads of meaty, gamey black fruits, smoked herb, pepper, and chocolate-like aromas and flavors. With full-bodied richness, a round, layered texture, terrific tannins, and a great finish, it's a powerhouse yet traditional Côte Rôtie that will need 4-5 years to shed its baby fat yet evolve for 20+ years.
