FINE+RARE, Apr 2021

This is a very classic Margaux – but with the precision of the modern-day era and therefore sure to please fans of the estate. The fruit is decidedly cooler-toned than more recent vintages, with menthol notes, dry savoury spice and ripe cassis fruit aromas. The spectrum of the flavours on the palate is impressive, starting with fresh primary blackcurrant moving to riper baked fruit and liquorice notes, all beautifully integrated with fine, close-knit tannins. This has lovely depth to the palate and a long, focused finish.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Rich fruit and exotic notes of spice and tropical fruits. Very expansive with the fruit almost covering the very considerable tannins. Rich and broad, with real excitement on the palate. (JR)

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Spicy dark fruit while also fragrant and open. Dry tannic finesse. Not quite as much intensity as there is in many in this vintage but really harmonious. (JH)

The 2020 Rauzan-Ségla is very perfumed and delineated on the nose, with vivacious black fruit, cassis and violet blossoming in the glass. The oak is very well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite rounded and plush, but there is backbone and structure here. Very persistent on the finish, this is a Rauzan-Ségla for the ages. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
