The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a lively bouquet of perfumed orange blossom, wild fennel and mint aromas that burst from the glass. The taut, fresh palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. The sapid finish urges you back for another sip. Not long in the mouth, but this is well crafted and, to put it simply, delicious.

Clay soils. One out of 8 barrels was new. Chassagne and St-Aubin have slightly higher sugar than in Meursault – less rain. So he took them out of oak a month ago and they will be in tank longer, to bring tension. Higher alcohol can take too much from the oak. Tank sample. Smells rich and ripe in bright citrus and delicate but definite spicy/mealy lees and oak character. That lovely clementine flavour that I usually associate with Meursault. Compact and full of energy, with a long almost savoury finish. Chewy and more intense than the Charmes. (JH)
