0.55 ha of 70-year-old vines – the domaine’s southernmost holding situated within the Clos de Corvées in Prémaux-Prissey. 70% of the crop lost to hail in three hits, and therefore a more cautious 50% whole bunch here. Rich and spicy on the nose, lifted by the stems but the dark-red fruit sings. Super-fine but firmer tannins here, more savoury, a light spice. Lithe, rounded, delicate yet long. Lots of tension and freshness, slim but not light. More tension and structure than flesh but still in balance. Gently chewy finish. (JH)

From an enclave within Aux Corvées, Lachaux's 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Corvées Pagets was hailed on three times and yielded only 15 hectoliters per hectare, but the wine has turned out brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with notes of orange rind, ripe red berries and sweet soil tones, framed by a deft touch of oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, it's lively and perfumed, concluding with a long and precise finish. Despite the hail, there's not even the remotest suggestion of tannic asperity.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Corvées Pagets 1er Cru comprises four barrels after being severely affected by hail. It has a rather stoic bouquet of introspective dark berry fruit mixed with black tea and damp earthy aromas. The medium-bodied palate delivers precise, filigreed tannins. That black tea element crops up again in the mouth, segueing into a subtle, brine-tinged finish that fans out gently. One of Lachaux’s most elegant wines this year.
