Tasting notes
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru exhibits more whole bunch character than the other four "CSJs". Brambly red fruit, brown spices and a touch of wet limestone. This is unquestionably the most transparent of the five. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, slightly coarser tannins but so much energy and tension. Perhaps it just tapers a little towards the finish? This is very classy, yet atypical in style for Jean-Marie Fourrier. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Perfumed and sumptuous, Fourrier's 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has turned out very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and raspberries, complemented by notions of violets, peonies and blood orange. Medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's suave and seamless, with succulent acids, velvety tannins and a rose-inflected finish.
Sweet spot Outstanding. An exuberantly fresh nose offers relatively high-toned notes of wild red cherry, pomegranate and currant that are liberally laced with earth, spice and discreet oak hints. There is once again good vibrancy to the generously proportioned and fleshy medium-bodied flavors that display fine power and plenty of minerality on the youthfully austere finale that is also very clearly built-to-age.
