Tasting notes
The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is quite low-key on the nose and demands coaxing from the glass. Dark berry fruit, iris flower and loamy scents percolate through with time. The palate is medium-bodied and slightly saccharine on the entry—just a little confit -like, but with admirable depth and satisfying delineation toward the finish. This has more to give, so afford it three or four years in bottle and it should climb back to the banded score that I bestowed from barrel. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Barrel sample. The deepest crimson I have come across tasting 2019 burgundies. Fruit-juice concentrate! The climat may eventually reveal itself but it’s hiding in the fruit soup for the moment. The fruit soup has energy, mind you … (JR)
The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak (one new barrel and one used). It has an intense bouquet of blackberry, briar, blueberry and violet aromas, very tight at first and demanding coaxing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins, layers of creamy dark fruit and a touch of licorice toward the persistent finish. Superb. But it will need time.
