Tasting notes
This Cru is located in the commune of Novello to the southwest of Barolo. The mix of clay sand and iron ore in the vineyard gives the wine a natural austerity and exceptional freshness, even in a warm vintage. The 2017 is an amazing, intense, bright red, with red cherry perfume, followed by delicate aromas of spice, leather, tobacco and incense. The palate is beautifully balanced and structured, with red fruit flavours and more earthy notes reminiscent of autumn leaves. It is distinctly mineral with a sapidity and freshness that enhance the long finish, full of delicate spice.

A release of 3,500 bottles, the Giacomo Grimaldi 2017 Barolo Ravera sources fruit from this high performing vineyard site that famously straddles the villages of Barolo and Novello. This wine is lean in appearance and consistency, and it shows a bright and lifted bouquet with plenty of violet and blue flowers. Those delicate tones are followed by wild cherry and blueberry, with a good amount of tar and smoke as well. You could choose to drink this wine in the near or long term, whichever you please.
The 2017 Barolo Ravera is resinous on the nose with pine sap, dried porcini, and plum pit. The palate is dark fruited and open, with black tea, black cherry, and cedar s well as warming spice on the finish. Drink 2022-2032.
The 2017 Barolo Ravera is rich and explosive in the glass. Soaring aromatics lead into a core of red/purplish fruit, all framed by insistent but well-integrated tannins. A vivid, large-scaled Barolo, the Ravera is superb today. It is one of the most alluring Barolos I have tasted from Ferruccio Grimaldi in some time.
