Drink 2025-2035, FINE+RARE, Jun 2022

The “Unique” Chardonnay has lower yielding/older vines compared to its 1er Cru counterpart Cuvee “Passion” – While they share a similar aroma and palate profile the Unique is more concentrated, it feels rounder texturally and more evocative. Bright yellow fruit frames its core profile and delicate leafy notes, nutty-wood elements provide complexity, hints of wild yeast and limestone mineral depth. Alluring on the palette-juicy and ripe with more exotic notes, lively acid, dense and persistent, excellent depth, multi-layered, framed by gorgeous mineral/saline character.

Aged in 100% new Burgundian pièces, the 2022 Chardonnay Malans Unique spent nine months on the full lees before the bottling in September last year. The malolactic fermentation is not allowed here anymore except in cool vintages, which have become quite rare though. The 2022 opens with a dense and complex nose with ripe fruit aromas intertwined with fine sur lie, cracknel and noble Burgundy fruit with Malans terroir spices. Supple, elegant and complex on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and powerful, very long, saline and intense Chardonnay with spicy tannins and nice reduction. It's salivating and very complex on the promising finish. This is a great wine that is still on its way. 13.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in March 2024.

Deep, pure, fresh and complex on the spicy-mineral, tightly structured nose, the 2019 Chardonnay Malans Unique exhibits stimulating lime, lemon and biscuit notes intertwined with ripe and elegant Chardonnay aromas. Full-bodied, rich and intense on the palate, this is a quite powerful and still somewhat phenolic but tight, pure and sustainably mineral Chardonnay selection with still-youthful tannin grip or even a certain astringency on the tight and concentrated, sustainably salty finish. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022.
