Tasting notes
The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Carelles was quite reserved when I tasted it from barrel, and it's the same way from bottle, unwinding with a youthfully reserved bouquet of ripe berries, licorice and dark chocolate, deftly framed by a discreet touch of oak. Medium to full-bodied, bright and tightly wound, it has gained in energy and precision with élevage, but it still needs some time in bottle to show all its cards.

Deep crimson. Like the Vieilles Vignes this is oaky but the dark-fruit can just about stand up to it. Dark, oaky and charry on the palate. This is for oak lovers but it is refined in that style, the tannins are dry and fine but prominent for now. (JH)
The 2018 Volnay Les Carelles 1er Cru comes from the bottom part of the slope, in a warm, sunny location, on ferrous clay soils. It has quite an opulent bouquet of black cherries, wild strawberry and touches of cassis – very different from the Les Caillerets. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, smooth and harmonious with an almost creamy texture, although I am seeking a little more tension to come through on the sensual finish.
