Tasting notes
A prickly, pungent nose evokes sweat, salt spray, lemon zest, bruised apple skin and smoky black tea. Palpable density and a faintly oily feel on the palate perpetuate the initial impression of lightly desiccated fruit, whose presence Selbach confirmed. Yet the energetically sustained, vanilla-, smoke- and salt-tinged finish doesn’t lack for primary apple and lemon juiciness. This powerhouse product of mid-October picking should prove exceedingly hearty in bottle.

The 2017 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese * is intense and concentrated on the deep and complex nose that reveals a touch of botrytis. Racy-piquant and lush on the palate, this very fine and elegant Spätlese has a firm structure and a long, salty and elegant and balanced finish, where raisin flavors are displayed. This is a very fine, elegant and textured Spätlese that should be cellared for a decade, not because it's too reductive (which isn't the case at all) but because it's so dense, subtle and complex all at the same time. There is so much potential in this Schlossberg that you will praise it even in 20 or more years. Tasted in March 2019.
