Open and charming, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux wafts from the glass with notions of sweet berry fruit, cherries, orange rind, rose petals and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a broad attack and a deep, layered mid-palate that's framed by beautifully ripe, powdery tannins, it's remarkably seamless despite its young age.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champeaux 1er Cru saw 50% whole bunch with two-thirds new oak. It has a subtle, cerebral bouquet featuring gorgeous black fruit mixed with sea spray, cockle sheds and graphite aromas; this is very classy. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very intense and energetic, leading to a sorbet-fresh, blood-orange-infused finish that has a lot of potential. Cellar this Champeaux for five or six years if you can, because it has ambition.

Two parcels, one 70 years old and another 50. Lots of clay so it puts up with the heat well. Cask sample. Very dense and concentrated on the nose. Smooth tannin management and sumptuous texture. Really lovely and rich yet lively. (JR)

A fine follow-up to the lovely 2018 rendition, Dugat-Py's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux opens in the glass with aromas of raspberries and cherries, complemented by hints of violets, smoked meats, rich soil tones and a pretty top note of rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with real texture and mid-palate amplitude, it's lively and penetrating, with a long, fragrant finish. As I've written before, these vines have been in the family for a long time, and the Champeaux was often purchased by Maison Leroy in the days before the Dugat family began domaine bottling. 92-94+ Points
