Score 89/100 · Neal Martin, Dec 2023

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru feels a little riper and a tad more exotic on the nose compared to its peers, with faint hints of fig and dates combining with the predominantly red fruit. This just shows more of the winemaking, at least at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry. Clearly there is some more skin maceration here, as it’s higher-toned than some others, but perhaps that comes at the cost of delineation and finesse toward the finish. This is plenty sleek, but not intellectual, and there is some Brettanomyces dampening its freshness. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru contains 50% whole bunch and is matured in 30% new oak (Billon and Chassin cooperages). The very cohesive bouquet features brambly red berry fruit, briar, black tea and undergrowth scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a peppery entry, fine acidity and a Morey-like structure toward the finish. While not amazingly long, it is very nicely focused and exudes breeding.

Darker fruit, 50% whole bunch, one third new wood which is standard for the Heresztyn 1ers crus. More crimson than purple. Fine even red purple, a little spice at the back, maybe a touch meaty too, good weight a medium bodied Gevrey with some persistence.
