Tasting notes
Charles van Canneyt only made 23 barrels of his village Chambolle this year, versus the normal 40 – which is a particular shame given the quality. It’s a blend of 11 parcels from all around the appellation, to give a true “village” wine. He opted for no punch-downs in 2019, as the skins gave up their colour and tannins so quickly. The resulting wine is surprisingly dark and intense in style, such is the concentration of the year. Nevertheless the wine has a real crunch of red fruit, with amazing acidity and elegant tannins. There’s a lovely floral lift of lavender and a wonderful clarity of fruit with dark, wild raspberry and riper, black cherry compote flavours. The tannins are textbook Chambolle, beautifully supple and elegant, backed by fantastic, fresh acidity. The fruit was all de-stemmed, with 20% new oak

Cask sample. Relatively deep crimson. Intense ripe mulberry fruit on the nose. Marked acidity keeps this fresh and youthful, and fine tannins too. A little sturdier than some Chambolles but this bottle should be worth cellaring. The ingredients are all in place for a satisfying mature bottle. Quite long. (JR)
(from 11 different parcels in 7 different lieux-dits). A more elegant and slightly fresher nose is composed by aromas of black cherry, raspberry and pretty violet nuances. There is a really lovely texture to the delicious, saline-inflected and sneaky long finish that is very well-balanced. A quality Chambolle villages. (89-91)/2025+
Aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet spices, rose petals and loamy soil introduce the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village, a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated wine that's lively and mineral. From the usual eleven parcels, dotted around the appellation, this is a fine success.
