Castellare's 2016 Chianti Classico is fresh, delicate and very pretty, with lovely purity of fruit and solid balance. Readers will find a wine with plenty of near-term appeal. Castellare's Chianti Classico is an attractive wine, but not the overachiever it can be.

Streamlined and focused, the 2016 Chianti Classico—95% Sangioveto (Sangiovese) and 5% Canaiolo, aged in tonneaux for seven months—is a simple wine with a slightly hollow mouthfeel and a metallic tinge to its taste profile. This wine opens to aromas of wild berry, rusty nail and scorched earth. This is an excellent vintage in Chianti Classico, and I am to assume that the best fruit and most focused efforts went to the high-end wines. Some 120,000 bottles were made.
Castellina in Chianti. 95% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo. Concentrated crimson. Stalky and sweetly brooding fruit nose with a touch of dried fruit. Lots of sour cherry and soft stalky tannins. A little rustic and a tiny bit astringent on the finish. (WS)
