The usual blend of Les Taillepieds and Clos des Chêne, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru has a more savory bouquet than the Auxey-Duresses, hints of dried blood mingling with the iron filings that infuse the red and black fruit. The palate is the most saline of the three reds that I tasted, delivering firm grip toward the finish. Maybe a little chewy at the moment; it just need 4–5 years in bottle.
