Deep violet. Highly perfumed, mineral-accented black and blue fruit, exotic spice, potpourri and incense aromas show excellent clarity and pick up hints of woodsmoke and vanilla as the wine opens up. Sweet and incisive on the palate, offering intense blueberry, cherry liqueur, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors and a hint of cracked pepper. Deepens steadily through the impressively long finish, which features gently gripping tannins and resonating floral and spice notes.

The 2015 Dry Red Wine No. 1 from Yarra Yering comes from vines planted in 1969 on gray silty loam. This is a more classically styled Australian red insofar as you can clearly tell the country of origin, but it has pretensions toward the Médoc. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and pure red berry fruit (strawberry and cranberry) interlaced with mint and cedar. This has succinct control toward the silky finish, which is impressive in terms of length and delivers a satisfying freshness that urges you back for another sip. Superb.

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot. Vines planted 1969! Aged for 15 months in French barriques (40% new). Picked 24 March. Lustrous ruby. Really subtle richness on the nose – obviously much more than a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. Wonderful delicacy and lift on the palate with some (attractive) medicinal notes and fine tannins in the background. Long with a burgundian peacock's tail sort of finish. Incredibly persistent. Really very impressive. And with lots more to give. (JR)
