Score 91/100 · Drink 2014-2028, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Feb 2014

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne opens to a black, inky color and super concentration that adds weight and consistency to the palate. Pian delle Vigne is very obviously executed in an international style with etched oak tones paired next to overtly jammy fruit. With time, this wine has also developed a mature tertiary bouquet with spiced beef jerky, mesquite wood and barbecue smoke. The aromas are so strong, they are almost too much to take in at once. There’s no denying however that the wine boasts solid foundations and good construction. What it lacks is the softer definition and lighter nuances of Brunello. It gives more of a bang, than it does a whimper. Decant for up to four hours. Drink: 2014-2028.

Dark crimson. Intense, complex, classic nose. Very serious. Spicy nose and sweet start to the palate. Zesty and full of pleasure without being heavy or sickly. Fine tannins intrude only at the very end. Really refreshing. (JR)

Saturated full ruby. Brooding, primary aromas of berries, black cherry and licorice. Dense, lush and seamless, with nicely integrated acidity giving shape to the youthfully medicinal dark berry, black cherry and mint flavors. Rather backward today and not yet showing its complexity, but likely to reward eight or ten years of cellaring. Finishes firmly tannic, supple and long.
