The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with scents of cassis, plums and sweet berry fruit, complemented by hints of raw cocoa, forest floor and peony. Medium to full-bodied, deep and lively, it's velvety and charming, underpinned by the bright acids that are one of this hillside site's hallmarks. I'm delighted to have a few bottles in my cellar.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles has an outstanding bouquet of perfumed black cherry, raspberry, cranberry and crushed stone aromas; touches of orange pith emerge with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, perfectly judged acidity and not a hair out of place on the finish. This is one of my favorite wines from Bachelet this vintage.

15 cm of soil over really compact subsoil that you cannot plant without a mechanical digger. Hard like Comblanchien. 350 m elevation. They have been campaigning for this to be elevated to a premier cru for some time now. Made since 2011 (but there’ll be no 2019 because too little was produced thanks to coulure ). Barrel sample. Light, fresh and more red fruited on the nose than the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes. Delicate red fruits, scented and with a stony freshness that is more mineral than fruit. Super-fine texture, plenty of tannin but it’s so fine you barely see it and there’s excellent freshness. An aérien wine. Elegant and long and already open and expressive. (JH)
