FINE+RARE Tasting Note

Ripe generous fruit aroma, dense yet supple tannin structure – fully resolved. The wine has a very good framework, even set tannins with the fruit being more on the black/ blue and plummy fruit spectrum – generous and fleshy with nice mid palate concentration, and fully integrated with the tannins. Jammy fruits but balanced and light graphite minerality provides integrated finish.

The 2019 Batailley has a well-defined bouquet with tobacco and light cedar scents, blackberry and briary developing more intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite elegant and refined, not the most intense Pauillac but beautifully proportioned with a sleek and quite persistent finish. Lovely. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Tasted blind. Simple crimson. Fine, medium intensity but rather aggressively tart fruit with a hint of glucose. A bit ordinary. (JR)

The 2019 Château Batailley is a darker, black-fruited, tobacco, and lead pencil-driven Pauillac that's medium-bodied, has a focused, lively mouthfeel, ripe yet firmer tannins, and integrated acidity. I like its overall balance, and it's certainly a classic Pauillac that will reward 4-6 years of cellaring and have two decades of prime drinking.
