Score 89-91/100 · Drink 2021-2028, Neal Martin, Jan 2020

The 2018 Marsannay Clos du Roy, which is from a relatively warmer terroir and had been racked two weeks earlier, has a simpler, more straightforward bouquet than the Longeroies and does not offer the same cerebral heft. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, bright red currant and cranberry fruit and a touch of salinity on the finish. Drink over the next six or seven years.

Once again there is an attractive coolness to the expressive and relatively elegant nose of plum liqueur, violet, lavender and a whiff of newly turned earth. The delicious, intense and solidly dense middle weight flavors possess an abundance of minerality on the youthfully austere and markedly firm but not hard finale. This too will need at least some patience as the supporting tannins are ripe but firm.

Iron-rich clay on degraded limestone. 100% whole bunch. Tank sample but may go back to barrel. Much less obviously stemmy than the Longeroies but fragrant with lifted dark fruit. Darker and more savoury than the Longeroies. Firm, dark, withheld, much more restraint but lovely dark finesse and length. The tannins are compact, dry and tense, in fact there is massive tension and freshness here. (JH)
