The 2015 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru offers a mixture of red and black fruit (blackberry, raspberry and cranberry) on the nose, intermingling with undergrowth, light tobacco and brown spice scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, taut and linear yet possesses real depth that becomes apparent on the persistent aftertaste. It is unapologetically backward and firm at the moment, but I suspect that this will turn into a very fine Volnay with the requisite bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru les Fremiets contains 50% whole cluster fruit this year and was raised in about 20% new oak. It has quite a strict and linear bouquet with cold stone scents infusing the brambly red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, good backbone with fine mineralité towards the poised finish. It might need just a little more contrast on the finish, but otherwise this is a very fine Volnay that has the substance to age over a decade or more. It certainly represents a huge step up from the 2014.

Bright full red. Aromas of strawberry, raspberry, spices and earth. Sweet and plush on the palate, but showing good grip and energy to its flavors of red fruits, wild spices and white truffle. Finishes with firm tannins and a meaty suggestion of bacon fat.
