The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has a lot of volatility on the nose that obscures the black cherry fruit underneath that veil. Powerful but not appealing and it deteriorates after 10 minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with dry, "furry "tannins and dark berry fruit. A slightly desiccated, high alcohol finish suggests this has little long-term viability. This is a vexing showing. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

From bottle, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is still marked by the extremes of the vintage. It offers up attractive aromas of cassis, cherries, rose petals and violets, but it's rich, firm and rather heady on the palate, bearing the stamp of the two hailstorms that struck this site. Mugnier wonders if it might evolve like his 1991, so perhaps time will be kind to it.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru was tasted from a blend of five cuvées. It has an attractive bouquet of mainly black fruit laced with black tea and bay leaf notes, plus touches of rose petal in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, tending more toward a red fruit profile, with wonderful salinity on the finish. Good potential. Excellent.
