Tasting notes
The only Côtes Du Rhône Philippe made in the vintage, the 2017 Côtes Du Rhône Mistral is 50% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Carignan, and Vaccarèse brought up all in tank. It's a perfumed, complex, elegant wine that has plenty of strawberry, kirsch, violets, bouquet garni, and pepper aromas and flavors. It's already drinking nicely and will keep for 4-6 years. Philippe Bravay is continuing as one of the most talented and passionate young vignerons in Châteauneuf du Pape. Located in the northern part of the appellation, he has ignored the trend towards special cuvées and continues to make a thrilling traditional Châteauneuf du Pape that’s always overflowing with Provencal charm and character. I was able to taste his 2016 from bottle as well (it was in barrel during my trip last year) and it’s unquestionably another brilliant, magical wine from this great vintage. Both the 2017 and 2018 are a step back, but not by much!
