Jellied white peach and white currant mingle on the high-toned nose with Chartreuse-like green herbal and floral concentrates. The glossy palate offers a corresponding combination of tang with jellied sweetness and of subtly cooling herbal with headily floral inner-mouth essences. Hints of candied ginger add stimulation to a finish every bit as sustained and multifaceted as that of the Herrenberg “Nr. 91,” but with better integrated, in no way excessive sweetness. This gives too much pleasure for me to consider suggesting one ought to wait before opening a bottle.

This moves to a more exotic peak of grapefruit, mango and papaya aromas and delivers an intense, stony-mineral impression. The palate has a very succulent, very juicy and intense feel with very striking and powerful acidity and sugar drive into a very, very long and pure finish. Drink over two decades.

The 2018 Maximin Grünhaus Abtsberg Riesling Auslese Nr. 89 is aristocratic on the nose, very precise, pure and elegant, with stony/mineral notes intertwined with ripe and lush, super precise and well-defined fruit aromas. Lush and round on the palate, with great balance but also tension and lingering salinity, this is a super clear, well-structured and highly refined Auslese with a gorgeously fine, lush and mineral finish that lingers and lingers and indicates tremendous aging potential. This wine is everything but too sweet (despite its 120 grams per liter of residual sugar) and is a great terroir wine. It's incredibly precise and fresh, with all the complexity of the Abtsberg. 7.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 26 19 in June 2019.

Spicy ripe citrus balanced by a more stony mineral character. Excellent acidic tension to balance the pure, ripe, honeyed lemon fruit. Creamy and long. (JH)
