Magnum. Intense mineral nose with bitter citrus fruit and strident acidity. Long and impressive, but really sharp-edged. Tart to the very last drop. Not much in the way of oak influence, but no less complex thanks to the strong mineral element. No reductive qualities. Deserves age. (RH)

The 2017 Meursault Village is lovely, offering up appealing aromas of crisp peach, pear, lemon, white flowers and a touch of praline. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with excellent cut and tension that belies its seductively textural attack.

Fermented in barrel – 2, 3 or 4 years old, none new. Tender vintage so he didn’t want to leave the wine too long in barrel and he needed the barrels for his 2018s, which are generous. Using Roulot’s technique of adding tension to the wine in tank. In tank since just before the 2018 harvest and will be bottled in February. Subtly spiced and a touch mealy but rather quiet on the nose. More spice and richness on the palate, full in the mouth (warmed sample) and broad but fresh enough, with freshness more from the leesy texture than from the acidity, it seems. Long and a little savoury on the finish. Acid rises at the very end to add flair. (JH)
