The 2010 Barolo Terlo Ravera exhibits enormous finesse and inner grace. This is a delicate and feminine wine that already offers most of the spectacular complexity you get with aged Nebbiolo. Pressed rose, wild berry, cola and grilled herb come together with an extreme sense of focus. A blast of powdered licorice also emerges with balanced intensity. This wine drinks well now but should continue its evolution over the next ten years.

Novello. Concentrated mid ruby with orange tinges. A little reductive on the nose, but lively and even a little tart on the palate. Sweet fruitcake notes, but not overtly stewed. Quite tannic, but not rough, and already enjoyable. Solid. (WS)

Novello. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Hints of dried fruit and fine, spicy notes. Bags of Nebbiolo fruit supported by ripe, powdery tannins. Not the most complex, and already approachable and enjoyable. (WS)

Marziano Abbona's Barolo Terlo Ravera has a little more nervous tension and minerality than the Pressenda, denoting its origins in the Ravera cru of Novello. Violets, lavender, dark cherries, plums and spices all burst from the glass in a racy, exceptionally polished Barolo. Hints of asphalt, graphite and smoke add complexity on the finish. I very much like the sense of energy here.
