The 2017 Vosne-Romanée le Clos d’Eugénie is matured in one-third new oak and includes 60% whole clusters, from what was apparently the largest crop produced, at 42hl/ha, after the two green harvests. This displays more red fruit than the Village Cru and also slightly better delineation. The palate is balanced with saturated tannin, a fine bead of acidity, moderate depth and a touch of dark chocolate toward the linear finish. Perhaps like the Village Cru, I would like to see more Pinot Noir expression.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Clos d'Eugénie displays pretty notes of rose petal, berry fruit, spices and wood smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied wine that's ample, velvety and fleshy, though it possesses more underlying structure than the regular Vosne AOC. Mallard told me he retained some whole clusters for this cuvée, which seems to have worked well.

From a walled plot just beside the winery. Not a registered name; a commercial name. 60% whole bunch. Three out of nine barrels new. Racked to tank and will be bottled mid January.  Richer and spicier than the village wine and shows the whole-bunch component. Bramble, suggests Michel Mallard and he’s spot on. Slightly floral. So fragrant. There’s a little more grip but no less finesse and elegance, so fluid you barely see the tannins though they are sufficient. Just slightly peppery as it opens. Beautifully fresh. (JH)
