Drink 2022-2030, FINE+RARE, Jun 2022

Given the difficult conditions of 2014 in Montalcino, this is outrageously good. Soldera has a reputation for excelling in cooler conditions and this is a perfect case in point – ethereal in character and beautifully balanced. The dried rose, perfumed scent is matched by earthier, ferric notes along with a higher-toned tomato leaf. Although the latter is often considered negative, here it adds a wild, lifted, herbal note that brings more complexity to the wine and complements the sweeter rose and savoury, dried-stone and spicy aromas. The breadth on the palate is where the magic really is. It stretches right across the palate and brings such effortless depth too. The tannins are still tight but just starting to ease up. The wine finishes with an overriding freshness. It really is in a wonderful place.

The product of a cool, rainy season, the 2014 Toscana Sangiovese remains bright and nervy in feel. White pepper, rose petals, mint, herbs and blood orange race across the palate. The 2014 is a shy wine, one with fruit very much in the background. It will be interesting to see how this ages. Today, the 2014 on the austere side.

A vintage Paolo described as 'difficilissima'. It was notorious throughout most of Italy with masses of rain. They rejected so many grapes that one hectare produced only 400 kg of them. The nose is not as directly aromatic as most vintages. But actually amazingly rich and lively for the vintage and the long with a refreshing note of mint. Quite a miracle really. (JR)

In 2014, the very challenging, wet growing season yielded just a single cask of Sangiovese that I was able to taste a few times before it was bottled. From the beginning, the 2014 was mesmerizing. It is all that and more today. Powerful and yet translucent in the glass, the 2014 presents a beguiling mélange of dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and leather. I would be in no rush to open the 2014 today, as it is still very young. Soldera has historically done quite well in difficult years. I won’t be at all surprised if the 2014 turns out even better than this note suggests.
