The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village has an attractive nose; the stems are a defining feature (70% whole bunches), lending an earthy pepperiness to the dark berry fruit. The palate is well balanced, not complex, yet fresh with those stems again, maybe a little too prominent for some on the finish. Drinking perfectly now, it should give another decade of drinking pleasure. Tasted at Bistro Cocotte in Beaune.

Three parcels comprising 0.57 ha in the heart of the village, including Aux Saules and Aux Communes. 70% whole bunch. Just 10% new oak maximum on the village wines. Light ruby colour. Here the red fruit is a little richer and sweeter than on the Pinot Fin and the fragrance is wonderfully lifted. It’s pretty but there’s also good depth of fruit and a light sprinkling of spice, as well as the freshness but not the herbal character of stems. Firmer, darker and more compact on the palate than I expected, the tannins like layers of paper, giving a firmness but no friction. Gently savoury and spiced on the long finish. Darker beauty and immense finesse. (JH)

Containing 70% whole bunches, the 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village is a blend of Les Communes, Les Saules and Bossières. It has a very floral bouquet, with wilted rose petals infusing the brambly red fruit, and hints of lavender tucked in just beneath. The medium-bodied palate is strict and linear, offering quite firm tannin and perhaps just requiring a little more finesse toward the finish at the moment. This is quite an uncompromising Village Cru, but intellectually it is very satisfying.
