FINE+RARE, Feb 2014

Dark red fruit and a sweet almond note which follows to the palate with lots of perfumed spicy, floral notes. This one has a really pronounced sweet spot, which is incredibly satisfying with riper tannins.

The 2008 Barolo Sarmassa is a fresher and more vibrant than the Cannubi, with a slightly darker tonality of red fruit. Flowers, spices and mint develop in the glass, adding a sense of vibrancy. The aromas and flavors flow gracefully to the long, energetic finish. Veins of underlying minerality give the wine its energy and poise.

Brezza remains one of the best-kept secrets in traditionally-made Barolo. One day people will figure it out, but in the meantime shrewd consumers would do well to pay attention to the best wines that emerge from this small cellar in the center of town. Importer: A.I. Medium red with an amber edge. Aromas of raspberry, mocha and chocolate, with complicating hints of minerals and underbrush. Offers a bit more texture and roundness than the Cannubi but comes across as blurry and lacking in thrust. There's a touch of sweetness in the middle palate but the tannins are somewhat harsh and the finish rather tart. Lacks real personality.
