FINE+RARE, Jun 2020

Viña Cobos, we thought it would be a good opportunity to give the many fans of his entry level (in price only) Felino Malbec 2018, the chance to secure the last cases currently in the UK. We discovered Paul Hobbs' Viña Cobos Felino Malbec last year and almost couldn't believe that a wine of such fantastic quality, and from such a highly reputed producer, could be such a bargain. Many of you enthusiastically took up the offer and we are confident that you shared in our excitement on trying the wine. The Viña Cobos estate in Argentina's Luján de Cuyo makes some of the most elegant and polished expressions of Malbec we have come across and Felino very much echoes the qualities of higher-priced single vineyard wines in the range. With more focus on the fruit and easy drinkability, it is nonetheless incredibly refined and impressive. The Felino Malbec is absolutely bursting with fruit! The aromas are of a mixture of fresh and cooked berries, ripe plums and raspberry compote. There is a hint of cinnamon spice and smoke but this is really dominated by a lovely fruitiness. The palate is juicy with soft, silky tannins and moderately structured making this wine enjoyable to drink on release. The pedigree of its winemaking shines through in its length and texture, with a savoury mocha flavour and velvety finish. For price to quality this has to be one of the best value Malbecs on the market.
