The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux 1er Cru, matures in around 50% new oak, has a nuance and quite tertiary bouquet, the sous-bois more pronounced here than the Evocelles at the moment, well defined and focused but discrete. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe, red cherry and blackberry fruit, fine mineralité and wondrous tension from start to finish. I suspect this will be coy once in bottle and deserves several years to show what it can do.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux unfurls in the glass with aromas of sweet wild berries, orange rind and rich soil, framed by a touch of creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with an ample, open-knit profile that's decidedly elegant and charming. It's a lovely wine, though it exhibits a stronger affinity with the communal cuvées than with the domaine's sole grand cru.

Vines mainly planted in the 1920s. Cool spot next to Mazis and Chambertin so usually a bit closed. Denis doesn’t use stems – the tannins are all from the skins. ‘I do it the old way. Stems are needed with younger vines.’ Refined, peppery, spicy dark fruit. Really fragrant in a stemmy way – or in a way that stem-lovers try to achieve – even though there are no stems. Like being in a woodland. Succulent and such fine texture, tout en finesse . You can see the oak but the fruit is so pure it holds its head high. Succulent aftertaste. (JH)
