Tasting notes
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux comes from 75-year-old vines from massal selection that tend to suffer millerandage that enhances air circulation around the bunches. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a fragrant mixture of red and blue fruit on the very floral nose: scents of pressed violets waft up from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, and there is a palpable marine influence, shucked oyster shells permeating the red fruit toward quite a feisty finish. Superb.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux delivers a superb bouquet of cassis, wild damson, grilled squab, sweet soil tones, licorice and exotic spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with a lavish core of old vine fruit, succulent acids, and fine-grained structuring tannins, concluding with a long and dramatic finish. This cuvée, from seventy-year-old vines, is the insiders' choice for chez Cathiard this year.
