The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from the upper slopes of the clos . It has a refined, understated bouquet, offering slightly tertiary red berry fruit and becoming quite "airy" in style. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit; a touch of licorice pops up toward the finish, which fans out nicely. This is a fine Clos Vougeot, though my preference is for the Chambolle Fuesselottes.

At the top of the slope just opposite Musigny. 20% whole bunch and delicate extraction to avoid hard tannins. Tank sample. Lightish cherry red. Crushed raspberry fruit and just a touch peppery on the nose. A firm style of Clos de Vougeot, with power and density and not yet open on the palate despite the aromatic first impression. Chewy but filled out at the core. More drive than muscle, sinewy finish, needing time to take on flesh. Quite quickly opens up in the glass. (JH)
