The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Demoiselles 1er Cru has a very intense nose, flirting with VA but managing to retain fine delineation. The palate is beautifully balanced with a harmonious, slightly creamy texture. The oak is neatly integrated, suggesting just a touch of white chocolate and praline toward the finish as it fans out, but there is class here. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

There are two barrels of the 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles, another rare appellation from Colin. Offering up aromas of mandarin, buttered apples, spices and beeswax, the wine is medium to full-bodied, rich and textural with good mid-palate volume, nice concentration and a lavish but nicely defined finish. Despite its gourmand personality it retains excellent freshness. As readers will know, Les Demoiselles is part of Le Cailleret, touching Le Montrachet itself.

(50% new oak): Bright yellow. Aromas of ripe nectarine, crushed rock and spicy oak. Tactile and adamantly dry, with juicy yellow fruit and spice flavors conveying excellent intensity, but a bit laid-back in the early going. This wine stands out in Colin's 2017 collection as it's more about yellow fruits and rocks than tangy green fruits and its slowly rising finish conveys a distinctly phenolic, even tannic quality. It will need time to absorb its substantial new oak element and express its underlying minerality.
