Tasting notes
Etna has become Carlo Ferrini's winemaking obsession since he found here a unique opportunity to make wines of singular elegance and terroir transparency. In his own words, the wines of Etna are all about “elegance, elegance, elegance!" From ungrafted 80-100 year old vines grown at a staggering 950 metres altitude on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, this wine is a superb reflection of its terroir. Technically it isn't even an Etna Rosso because the altitude is too high! This gives added freshness to the powerful and expressive Nerello Mascalese, which is often described as a cross between a Burgundian Pinot Noir and Barolo. In 2017 this freshness and elegance provides the perfect balance to the rich, concentrated fruit that this vintage gave rise to. The volcanic soil is captured in the vibrant mineral energy in the wine making Ferrini's Alberelli a wonderful embodiment of the aromatic and mineral driven style that top Italian wines provide like no other. Bursting with black and red cherry fruit, rose petals, spices, crushed stones and smoke. Wonderful lifted palate with immense freshness and silky tannins surrounding the concentrated core of juicy plum and cherry fruit. This is long and dense, but never heavy, with a fine line of minerality on the finish that transports you to the high volcanic slopes of Mount Etna.

Carlo Ferrini's Alberelli di Giodo is a newish reality on Etna that presented its first vintage in 2016, following years of Etna winemaking experience by this celebrated Tuscan consultant. He now has the 2017 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese on the market. This is an extremely elegant and expressive interpretation of Nerello Mascalese with lots of crisp energy and lively freshness. Obtaining this level of vigor is not always easy with this finicky grape, but Carlo nails it. His wine is supported by an extremely fine and silky texture, and the bouquet is impeccably clean and pure. There is a drying mineral note that reminds you of its volcanic roots and recalls the 2017 vintage heat. The vines are 80 years old and planted at 950 meters in elevation. This is Carlo's only Etna wine (for now) and he makes 7,200 bottles.
Bigger and less refined than the 2016. You needed to pick early in 2017. Pretty dry on the end. Very youthful. (JR)
A strong and dense Etna red with plums, dark berries, orange peel and lemons on the nose and palate. Full-bodied. Layered and flavorful. Juicy fruit. Needs time to open, but great potential from these ancient vines. Better in 2021.
