According to Klaus Peter Keller botrytis literally ‘exploded’ in the vineyards in October, so the family was happy to be able to salvage enough healthy grapes for just 500 litres of a dry Auslese from the Hubacker. For this they had to harvest slightly earlier than planned, not only reflected by the relatively pale golden colour of the wine, but also by the fact that it showed slightly less substance in the mouth than its predecessors. On the plus side, it has to be noted, that with crunchy melon and green kiwi fruit there is still plenty of bite, which stands in a fascinating contrast to the waxy and smoky notes of advanced maturity. Certainly better than Klaus Peter’s laconic comment, ‘that’s 2000 for you’, would lead you to believe. (MS)
