Brilliant violet. Intense, mineral-accented red berry and cherry scents are complicated by suggestions of lavender and allspice. Sappy and precise on the palate, displaying bright, spicy lift and cut to the bitter cherry, raspberry and floral pastille flavors. Fleshes out and becomes sweeter on the finish, which shows superb, floral-driven tenacity and silky tannins that come in late.

The 2016 Brouilly Cuvée Vieilles Vignes comes from argilo-calcaire soils. It has an adorable bouquet with pure red cherries, crushed strawberry and rose petal scents that seem very harmonious. This has much more class than Jean-Louis Dutraive's Fleurie this year. The palate is well balanced with sappy red berry fruit on the entry, a tang of marmalade and fig, leading to quite a gourmand, bacon fat-tinged finish. This is just a smooth and quite sensual Brouilly full of character.
