Deep ruby. Pungent black raspberry and cherry cola aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied violet, olive and black pepper. Fleshy and expansive on the palate, offering sappy, spice-tinged red and blue fruit flavors that put on weight and become spicier with air. Concentrated, pure and seamless in texture, finishing with strong thrust and velvety tannins that add gentle grip.

A big step up over the l’Eglantine, the single vineyard 2013 Côte Rôtie Lieu Dit Montmain offers a richer, sweeter bouquet of raspberries, crushed flowers and spice; the wine is full-bodied with richness and ultra-fine tannin that frame the finish beautifully. Coming from a site just to the east of Les Grandes Places (this is rugged, schist soils), completely destemmed and aged in a scant 15% new wood, enjoy this classic, textbook Côte Rôtie over the coming decade.

Vivid ruby. Sexy, spice-accented aromas of black raspberry, potpourri and smoky minerals, with a hint of fennel in the background. Concentrated yet lithe and precise, offering sappy, spice-tinged dark berry flavors with a bracing kick of acidity that adds focus and back-end lift. Fleshes out with air and shows excellent clarity and alluring sweetness on the long, vibrant, gently tannic finish.

Cask sample. Élevage in oak barrels. Mid crimson with a pale rim. The nose is heavily masked by oak. Really rather dull. Stodgy without much lift and the fruit is currently submerged. Scrawny tannins on the finish. Fast fade on the finish. (JR)
